Application period: March 31/October 31

Documents to be sent to phd@inf.elte.hu:

-filled application form
-request regarding the chosen subjects
- Published publication
- Supervisor's recommendation (sent by the supervisor)

Prerequisites for the comprehensive exam:

  • At least 120 credits must be completed before the comprehensive exam, including 6 credits for a preparatory subject.
  • Of the 120 credits, 24 must be courses credits and 66 must be research credits.
  • At least 21 days before the exam, you must submit a credit certificate approved by your supervisor and the head of the doctoral program. The recommended submission deadline is December 15 or May 15.
  • At least one publication must be available before the comprehensive exam.
  • A preparatory course must be completed for at least one of the two selected exam subjects.
  • The study plan for the semester of the comprehensive exam must be compiled in such a way that all necessary requirements are met before the exam.

About the comprehensive exam:

  • The comprehensive exam will be conducted before a three-member committee.
  • At least one member of the committee must be an external lecturer (not affiliated with the university).
  • The student must be notified of the exam date at least 21 days in advance.
  • The comprehensive exam is considered successful if the student receives a passing grade in both subjects and the dissertation section.
  • In the event of a failed exam, it may be retaken only once during the same exam period, no later than February 15 or September 15, at least 15 days after the failed exam.
  • In the event of a re-examination or change of date, there is no need for a further 21-day waiting period to schedule the new exam date.
  • In the event of a failed complex exam, the student's legal status will be terminated at the end of the exam period.
  • The exam consists of two main parts: 1) the theoretical part, where the candidate is examined on the two exam subjects, and 2) the dissertation part, where the candidate gives a 20-minute presentation on their knowledge of the literature, their research results, their doctoral research plan, and the schedule for writing their dissertation.
For more information on the rules of the comprehensive exam, please refer to Sections 48–55 of the Doctoral Regulation.
