The Doctoral School Council appoints two official reviewers who prepare written evaluations of the dissertation. Reviewers have a maximum of 60 days to submit their evaluations. If both reviewers provide a positive evaluation, the dissertation may proceed to a public defense.
The defense must be held within two months (during the academic year: September 1 – May 31) following the positive reviews. After the reviews are received, the candidate coordinates with members of the defense committee (chair, secretary, members, and reviewers) to set a date.
The proposed date and location of the defense, along with the signed approval form from all committee members, must be submitted to the Doctoral School Administration Office no later than 21 days before the defense.
The candidate must submit a written response to the reviewers’ comments at least one week before the defense. Then the Doctoral School Administration will send the official invitations and publish the announcement of the public defense.
The doctoral dissertation must be defended in a public session before the defense committee. During the defense, the candidate presents the research results in approximately 20 minutes, followed by questions from the committee, the reviewers, and members of the audience. A written record of the defense will be prepared. The typical duration of the defense is 1.5 to 2 hours.
If the defense is successful, the Doctoral Council of Informatics and the Council of the Doctoral School of Informatics summarize the entire doctoral procedure. Based on the results of the comprehensive exam, the written evaluations, and the defense, it assesses the candidate’s overall performance and submits a recommendation to the University Doctoral Council for the awarding of the doctoral degree.
