Main research areas
As an expert in cognitive data and information visualization and communication, my research delves into the cognitive and historical aspects of geo-visualization. I am passionate about exploring the use of visualization as a powerful graphical interface between humans and computers (HCI), the role of maps in graphic communication, and the cognitive processes related to maps and other cartographic representations. My experiments involve tracking eye movements to determine the efficiency of the display of spatial information and the graphical interfaces of GIS software. I conduct studies in the field and virtual urban space (VR) to better understand the spatial reference frameworks for human spatial cognition, such as spatial orientation, wayfinding, and navigation. My focus is on creating situated, cognitively relevant, and useful visualizations to support human navigation and spatial cognition.
In addition, my research also specializes in the history of cartography as a discipline. I study early cartographic representation forms, particularly in the periods of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. I am particularly interested in the cartographic heritage of Hungarian map history and study the structure and information content of early maps from the aspects of digital humanities (DH). Finally, I also explored early map printing technology and colouring. In my experiments, based on historical map- and globe-making practices, I create unique, hand-made cartographic artefacts. My deep knowledge and experience in these fields make me a sought-after expert and partner for anyone interested in exploring the fascinating world of cartography.
