Online Placement Test - for students of the BSc in Computer Science

If you have been admitted to the Computer Science BSc, you have the chance to decide how you would like to start your studies.

Starting university in a new country, with a different culture and away from your family, can be very challenging. You will also study in English instead of your native language, which can make academic work even harder. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to students having weak results or even leaving university without a degree. In previous years, around 6–12% of new students could not finish their studies.

Most Hungarian universities have noticed this problem and try to help international students adapt to their new environment and the higher academic expectations. Since the academic year 2019/20, the ELTE Faculty of Informatics has offered a Preliminary Semester to support students at the beginning. In the Preliminary Semester, you can improve your basic mathematics and IT knowledge and attend free English classes. Based on previous years, students who joined the Preliminary Semester usually get better results in their first year compared to students who start directly with the BSc. Also, the number of students who drop out has decreased to 4–5%. Only about 1.1% of students leave during the Preliminary Semester!

For the 2025/26 academic year, all newly admitted students can decide if they want to:

  • start with the Preliminary Semester, or
  • start directly with the BSc in Computer Science programme.

Who is the Preliminary Semester recommended for?

  • Students who scored 10–13 points on the entrance maths test.
  • Students whose English level is not stronger than B2.
  • Students who feel they need to improve their algorithmic thinking and IT skills.

To help you decide, you can try a sample placement test from previous years in the ELTE MOOC system. All admitted Computer Science BSc students will receive an invitation by email.

Deadline to decide: 25 August 2025

In-Person Assessment Tests - for students of the Preliminary and BSc in Computer Science

During the training week, all new students must complete three short tests:

  • Algorithmic thinking
  • Mathematics
  • English language

These tests help us see your current level of knowledge. This way, your lecturers can plan your classes in the best way possible.

Important:

  • You will have about 45 minutes for each test.
  • You do not need any special tools — just bring paper and a pen
  • The tests will be available in the ELTE MOOC system. You will receive an invitation to the email you used for admission.

The in-person tests will take place on 8–10 September 2025. Your exact time depends on your fixed group and will be announced during the training week or by email. Please arrive 5–10 minutes earlier so we can start on time.

If you have any questions, please check the website or contact us for help.
Good luck with your preparation — we are looking forward to welcoming you at ELTE!
