Hungarian map research

The main aim of the Novus Atlas Hungaricus project is to create the most complete collection of maps of Hungary published before 1850. The complex workflow of the project includes the research of Hungary-related maps, systematization and scientific processing of these materials following the expectations of 21st-century scholarship. As a result of the research work a complex database will be created. It will be the largest organized online catalogue of Hungarica maps (maps depicting the Kingdom of Hungary) in searchable form, with standard bibliographic descriptions based on a wide range of sources. The research aims to be the first complete depiction of the cartographic heritage of the Hungarian nation, to present our country throughout history, from the perspective of other nations. Our goal is to create a database which is accessible to everyone, and which collects the historical map representations of Hungary together with their accurate descriptions. This collection commemorates the periods of Hungarian history in a worthy way and represents the changes in our nation.Since the current most complete catalogue is only available in printed form, we can provide many new opportunities for researching Hungarica-maps worldwide by creating an online searchable database. The results of the research work, the precise and standardized bibliographic description, will be available in English as well as in Hungarian. So carto-bibliographic data can be transferred to the descriptions of any Hungarian or foreign collection, thereby making it possible to refine the processing of Hungarica maps everywhere. During the thorough documentation of the previous owners' histories, we provide the opportunity for the digital reconstruction of former collections, or we can provide reliable information about the individual books or atlases in which the maps were published as appendices. All this will be done in a full chronological overview and, perhaps most importantly, with full-text search criteria.
