Friends don't let friends put unsupervised machine learning algorithms in production

Five years ago machine learning was all the craze in IT security -- and we, of course, set out to launch an ML-based security product. We learned a lot along the way, and in this presentation, we'd like to share some of those findings. We will talk about how hard (and fun) it is to build a team that is expert in both data science and network protocols & IT security, how do sales teams sell features that you never had, and why did we only bring outdated code for a proof-of-concept deployment in Shenzhen. We will also talk maths: how could we apply existing, well-researched algorithms for new datasets and come up with new algos, the difference between manually training and running a model and creating a standalone ML product, and we will cover the metrics we designed to measure the performance of our ML -- and the surprises we had after doing the measurements. And finally, we'll talk about what an acquisition does to a novel product and how is there sometimes 3 years of active work between a well-performing algorithm and a minimum viable product.

Ákos Bódis - (Product Manager, Yellow Cube)
Vectra uses artificial intelligence to automate real-time cyberattack detection and response – from network users and IoT devices to data centers and the cloud. All internal traffic is continuously monitored to detect hidden attacks in progress. Detected threats are instantly correlated with host devices that are under attack and unique context shows where attackers are and what they are doing. Threats that pose the biggest risk to an organization are automatically scored and prioritized based on their severity and certainty, which, enables security operations teams to quickly focus their time and resources on preventing and mitigating loss. In this presentation we will show you the basics of Vectra Cognito and we also prepare a live demo, to demonstrate how in real life works. https://yellowcube.eu/hu/vectra/
