Course description:

Computational linguistics is a relatively new interdisciplinary field, which deals with computational language modeling and implementing computer programs performing useful tasks involving processing of human language such as spelling checking, machine translation, information retrieval and extraction, summarization.

The course will introduce students to the basics of the field. The class will cover a range of topics that will help students to understand current language technologies and fundamental methods and algorithms used in natural language processing.

Contents:

1. Overview.

2. Regular expressions, finite-state automata and transducers.

3. Morphological analysis.

4. Segmentation, spelling checking.

5. N-grams.

6. Part-of-speech tagging.

7. Formal grammars, parsing with context-free grammars.

8. Lexical semantics, word sense disambiguation.

9. Applications.
